The Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, where particles will begin to circulate around its 17 mile circumference tunnel next week, will recreate energies not seen since the universe was very young, when particles smash together at near the speed of light.
Such is the angst that the American Nobel prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has even had death threats, said Prof Brian Cox of Manchester University, adding: "Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat."
The head of public relations, James Gillies, says he gets tearful phone calls, pleading for the £4.5 billion machine to stop.
"They phone me and say: "I am seriously worried. Please tell me that my children are safe," said Gillies.
Emails also arrive every day that beg for reassurance that the world will not end, he explained.

"Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat."
BEST. QUOTE. EVER!

Some mind-blowing facts about the experiments:
The energy that is concentrated in a tiny volume is equivalent to that of two elephant herds, each with 120 members, running toward each other at top speed in the Savanna.
While the experiments are ongoing, the CERN computer centre will be engulfed by a data tsunami: the information received per second is equivalent to the text printed in all books in every library worldwide
There will be an average of 600 million collisions per second. Only a fraction of it is of any interest and, on average, only one collision in every 200,000 will be saved.
Regardless, 20 billion snapshots will accumulate every year, all of which need to be evaluated in detail.

This is just what "they" want... FEAR FEAR FEAR! If the proponderence of evidence showed this to be a dangerous thing I'm fairly certain somebody on the project would say, "Hey, wait a second...we don't all have to be sheep!"
Baaaaa!-

firstly its not being properly turned on this wednesday. the particles won't start being fired till later this month.
to chuck in a couple more facts i believe it can only run at night as they use power from the national grid and when it is turned on it will use a 1/3 of the power from the swiss national gird-

Maybe we're in a loop... maybe our universe was created the last time we fired up the Large Hadron Collider.

Ok, Who on here has been sending death threats to the scientist? I will bet anyone here 1 million dollars that it will not destroy the planet.
-
If there is some kind of catastrophic happenstance next week, I am sure that the current group of world leaders will be able to deal with it in short order.

Didn't the Martians have a Large Hadron Collider once?

Will this interrupt my cell phone service? I mean, really. Not ONE of my calls better be dropped!

It's the anti-matter generator they really should worry about.

Oh cheese, these people are so silly. It's perfectly safe, unlike portrayals of such machines in novels (FICTIONAL novels) like Angels & Demons and Blasphemy (both great reads, but totally FICTION).

It's Doctor Seuss all over again. The world is a-sittin' on an elephant's nose.

Why are these people only saying somthing a few days before the experiment is due to happen? They should have said somthing before the money was spent.
Like back in 1995!

wow, that's hilarious!!

If this helps create better cleaner energy, and new useful technology fire it up. Twats be quite.
-
It would be so hilarious if the LHC crew were to announce that they've actually ran the first experiment and are in the process of interpreting the data : - P
I bet, even in that case, that a good portion of the cranks and doomsday prophets would *still* be freaking out...
