Phone made from recycled bottles

Image...
Motorola unveiled a cell phone made of recycled water bottles on Tuesday, hoping to cash in on the trend for environmentally friendly products.

The company, which dropped to No. 4 in the global handset market in the most recently reported quarter due to a weak product line-up, said the W233 Renew eco-friendly phone would be sold by Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA in the current quarter.

It did not disclose pricing for the phone, which will be showcased at this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Motorola said it was the world's first carbon neutral phone. As well as using recycled materials for the plastic casing, the company also pledged to offset the carbon dioxide used in manufacturing, distribution and operation of the phone through investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation...

How in the hell is that possible...

That's incredible! Now if only someone were to recycle cell phones into water bottles! We probably go through more phones than bottles nowadays!

Great news! Let's hope this wonderfully green trend continues with as many industries as possible. I don't know why more products or manufacturers do not take advantage of not having to start from scratch each time a new item is constructed.

Automobiles, all appliances/electronics & tire recycling are way overdue considering how many resources it takes to make one & how many end up eventually abandoned across the country or in landfills. Reduce - Reuse - Recycle, it's that easy.

This is absolutely incredible. I try to avoid getting new cell phones unless mine is renderede unusable. Think of how many perfectly good phones are wasted when people upgrade just because they can.

Yeah! I would love one of those. Wonder if the price is more or less than the usual phone? At least they come in cool colors.

go moto ... now lets see others follow ... and well how about stoping buying water in single serving bottles and just use a filter .. that is the best way to cut down on the plastic pollution -- remember plastic bags are even worse use a reusable bag or a paper one

Good point. Unless you live in a Third World country where you simply cannot drink the water, buying water in plastic bottles is simply stupid.

By the way, when I go hiking, which I love to do, I fill up my old saved water bottle with cold water, orginally from the tap, that is kept in a bottle in the refrigerator. I still have water with me, and I'm not constantly using new water bottles.

why is this so astounding? it's something that should be commonplace, isn't it? what's astounding as that more commodities AREN'T made of recycled materials.

Well, if we're going to be so dependent on plastic, I reckon recycling the compound is a good route to take. I agree with numinant in that this should be more commonplace, but we have to start somewhere. Hopefully this is only the very beginning of what should be a lifestyle change.

More and more things are being recycled. We are in a good era for recycleing.

Like these phones won't wind up someday in a rubble heap or an e-waste junkyard? Don't we have enough already? I hope people don't then get the idea they can keep consuming bottled water and other drinks in plastic and think they are then green. I'm sure water bottlers will spin this now to be able to keep on pumping out the water others need for profit. We shouldn't be bottling water for proft in the first place. But hey, let's make a new gadget for the people to go ahhh over, then they will forget where it actually came from. And people in developing countries will still go without potable water while companies like Coca-Cola continue sucking it out.

There are some very good points being made here by all the people making posts. Everyone should be trying to buy as little plastic as possible--hard to do in today's world--and should recycle as much of it as one possibly can.

For my part, I constantly remind everyone I know that they should be recycling and that they can just fill up their water bottles from the tap. If their tap water has an overdose of unpleasant chemicals in it, they will usually burn off if they let the water sit overnight in a container in the refrigerator.

    JanForGore,

If more money were being spent on water treatment facilities in the Third World, there would be less need for bottled water there, too. Potable water is, also, an important aspect of modernizing any country.

As Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore once famously said--and he certainly knew how to develop a country--"Clean water times birth control is the square root of development."
