The godfather of punk guitar, Ron Asheton of the Stooges, was found dead Tuesday in his Ann Arbor, Mich., home.
The Stooges emerged in 1967 out of Ann Arbor with Iggy Pop (aka Jim Osterberg) on vocals, Asheton on guitar and his younger brother, Scott Asheton, on drums. Dave Alexander played bass.
The Stooges never achieved commercial success (their 1969 debut peaked at Number 106), but the punk acts that followed -- from the New York Dolls to the Sex Pistols and the Ramones -- cite them as their single biggest influence.
